We are all telling our stories, and these stories tend to come true, sometimes in strange ways. The stories we tell ourselves, about ourselves...
But I would dare add that yes, if you have front-row seats to a brawl, you'll have a pretty good idea of what you're seeing. The guy who's watching on TV may see a different angle, but that doesn't necessarily mean he is right and you are wrong, or that you are (of all things) lying. Likewise, if you live in a city, you probably have a pretty good idea of the vibe on the street. Somebody reading about that same city's travails from several thousand miles might construct a different story.
Those on the (more) right side tend to conflate all left-wing actions with the start of Communist totalitarianism (they have their reasons--historical precedents--I'll grant that). I lean left, though, and I admittedly see, say, the storming of the Capitol as the stirrings of fascist totalitarianism (and I have my reasons...March on Rome and all that). It does seem there is a kind of creeping totalitarianism wherever we look, however.
A kind of roundabout way of saying: we should obviously think critically about things, but there's also an element to trusting what we see and feel.
